Description
The aim of this study was to determine the transcriptomic differences in maize in response to different planting densities to gain insights into density tolerance. The maize hybrid Xianyu335 was grown under low and high planting densities, and the ear and lower stem node leaves were collected at the grain filling stage for RNA sequencing. We identified 825 and 1852 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in the ear and the lower leaves respectively under high planting density, including several that were common or unique vis-à-vis anatomical site. GO analysis further indicated that the response to high planting density-related stresses mediated by pathways involving osmoprotectants biosynthesis, fatty acids (FAs) biosynthesis and catabolism, transcription factors (TFs), phytohormones and protein kinases (PKs). Our findings elucidate the molecular mechanisms underlying the physiological and biochemical responses in maize to high planting density. Overall design: RNA-seq of leaves at different nodes of maize hybrid Xianyu 335 under different plant densities were conducted to explore the mechanisms of responsing to high plant density
