Description
Diverse signaling pathways regulated by phytohormones are essential for plant adaption to adverse environments. Root endophytic bacteria can manipulate the hormone-related pathways to benefit their host plants under stress conditions, but the mechanisms underlying the endophyte-mediated plant stress adaptation remain poorly discerned. Herein, acetic acid-producing endophytic bacteria Lysinibacillus fusiformis Cr33 greatly reduced Cd accumulation in tomato plants. L. fusiformis led to a marked increase of jasmonic acid (JA) content and down-regulation of iron (Fe) uptake-associated genes in the Cd-exposed roots. Accordantly, acetic acid treatment also remarkably increased JA content and inhibited root uptake of Cd uptake. In addition, root inoculation with Cr33 promoted the bioavailability of cell wall and rhizospheric Fe. However, chemical repression of JA biosynthesis largely weakened the endophyte-alleviated Cd stress in plants. Furthermore, root inoculation with Cr33 remarkably suppressed nitric oxide (NO) burst in the Cd-exposed roots, which was similar to those treated with JA or acetic acid. Taken together, our findings indicated that the endophytic bacteria L. fusiformis prevented Cd accumulation in tomato plants, involving activation of acetic acid-mediated JA signaling pathways.
