Description
Asparagus officinalis (garden asparagus) is dioecious (i.e., has females and males). Only female flowers grow on female individuals of A. officinalis, and they have degenerate stamens. On the other hand, only male flowers grow on male individuals, and they have incompletely developed pistils. To elucidate which genes are involved in regulating the flower development or sex in A. officinalis, its flower organs (tepals, pistils and stamens) were separated and subjected to RNA sequencing.
