Description
Solanum sisymbriifolium is a distant relative of potatoes and tomatoes that has been shown to be nearly as effective as potato at inducing potato cyst nematodes to emerge from their eggs and cysts. Unlike a true host, it fails to support their further development into mature adults and cysts, leading to the parasites’ death. For this reason, LT has been investigated in Europe and in this country as a “trap crop”, one that has proven capable of greatly reducing Globodera pallida populations. Our goal is to identify and isolate genes responsible for this immunity and to determine whether they can be transferred into potato germplasm for development of commercial varieties suitable for the Northwest. In order to do this, we are first, assembling a de novo transcriptome of S. sisymbriifolium, and will then follow this up with an RNAseq analysis of gene expression changes after G. pallida infection.
