Description
Ananas comosus var. bracteatus (red pineapple) is an herbaceous perennial monocot plant originating from South America. It belongs to the family Bromeliaceae, genus Ananas, species A. comosus (L.) Merr. (diploid, 2n=2x=50). Most plants of this family are commercially cultivated for their fruit, the high-quality fibre of their stem and leaves, and their large number of secondary metabolites. However, A. comosus var. bracteatus is cultivated commercially as an ornamental plant for its colourful chimeric leaves and decorative red fruit. Because of its complex genome, it is difficult to understand the molecular mechanisms involved in its growth and development. Moreover, there is no genomic information available A. comosus var. bracteatus. Therefore, we performed high-throughput transcriptome sequencing to generate large quantities of transcript sequence.
