Description
Mango (Mangifera indica L.), a member of the family Anacardiaceae is an allotetraploid fruit tree with small genome size of 439 Mbp packed in 20 chromosomes (2n = 40). Vavilov has suggested Indo-Burma region as the centre of origin of mango. Mukherjee considered origin of genus Mangifera probably in Burma, Siam, Indo-china and the Malay Peninsula, but the birth of common mango in Assam-Burma region. The commercial varieties of mango have originated largely in India through selection of variants resulting from recombination and segregation of characters in the progenies and then spread to the rest of the world. Mango is known as ‘king of fruits’ in India for its rich taste, flavor, color, huge variability and varied end usage. With annual production of 18 Mt from an area of 2.50 Mha, India is the largest producer of mango in the world. This genomic resource will fast track the mango varietal improvement for higher productivity, disease resistance and superior quality for various end-usage in India and abroad.
