Description
Echinochloa colona is a problematic weed of rice. A biotype with resistance to herbicides representing four different mechanisms of action was found in Sunflower County, MS. Resistance to two of these herbicides, imazamox and fenoxaprop-p-ethyl, is known to involve a non-target site mechanism (the enzyme targeted by the herbicide has not been altered and is still sensitive to the herbicide). To study this, a transcriptome was generated using the resistant biotype and a known sensitive biotype. RNA was isolated from each biotype before and after imazamox treatment. Differential gene expression analysis was used to compare the resistant and sensitive biotypes to each other before and after treatment with the goal of identifying transcripts whose products might be involved in herbicide resistance.
