Description
Aloe, a shrubby tropical/subtropical plant with succulent and elongated leaves, belongs to family Xanthorrhoeaceae, subfamily Asphodeloideae. The genus contains more than 360 species, out of which only four have been reported to exhibit medicinal properties: Aloe vera, Aloe arborescens, Aloe ferox and Aloe perryi.Among all the species, Aloe vera Linne Synonym Aloe barbadensis Milleris considered to be medicinally the most potent and therefore is most popular . Aloe vera shows innumerable medicinal characteristics such as healing capacity against skin burns, anti-inflammatory hepatoprotective anti-tumor, anti-ulcer, antihypercholestromic , anti-hyperglycemic, anti-asthmatic and antioxidant . Aloe extracts have been used to treat even AIDS . It has similar antiaging effects as vitamin A derivativesMost of the biological activities of plants are attributed to secondary metabolites. Aloe vera is a source of valuable secondary metabolites which include anthraquinones, polysaccharides, alkylbenzenes, dehydrabietic acid derivatives, lactin, salicylic acid, lignin, saponin and sterols. Biological potential of medicinal plant is determined by the various complex interactions between the genome, gene products and metabolites. Functional genomics approaches are now emerging as powerful tools to accelerate the comprehensive understanding of molecular basis of biological functions. Genomics approaches have also proved as significant tools to identify the transcription factors and candidate genes involved in plant secondary metabolism. Next generation sequencing technology piloted the genomics field by providing rapid, cost effective and efficient gene sequencing data enabling identification of novel genes related to metabolic pathways especially in non-model plants for which no reference genome is available. . Present project emphasizes on whole transcriptome sequencing of Aloe vera leaf and root tissue, performed by using Illumina HiSeq technology. It provides valuable sequence information from Aloe vera leaf and root tissue with special emphasis on genes related to secondary metabolic pathways.
