Description
The genome of B. oleracea was sequenced using a hybrid Illumina/ Roche 454 approach generating an assembly representing 75% of the predicted genome size. Two genotyping-by-sequencing methods were used to generate dense genetic maps and anchor almost 93% of the assembled scaffolds to nine pseudo-chromosomes. Over 50,000 genes were annotated with 40% of the genome predicted to be repetitive, both relatively higher than that found in B. rapa thus contributing to the increased genome size of B. oleracea. The underlying triplicated nature of the genome was uncovered and expression of the annotated syntelogs indicated that the remnants of one of the three genomes maintained dominance even after significant chromosomal rearrangement.
