Description
S. globulifera L.f. (Clusiaceae) is a 25–40 m tall late successional tree in evergreen mixed humid forests with a geographic range from Guinea Bissau to Tanzania in continental Africa (but not Madagascar) and from Mexico to Brazil in America. It has a wide ecological amplitude and grows in forests from sea level to 2600 m altitude with an annual rainfall of 650–2100 mm. Symphonia is a very old genus with a probable origin in continental Africa or Madagascar. The oldest fossil pollen records were found in Nigeria and date to the mid-Eocene. The genus consists of a further 16–23 species, all endemic to Madagascar.
