Description
Sennosides are medicinal compounds derived from Senna (Cassia angustifolia Vahl.) leaves and pods which are in huge demand as natural laxatives. They have been used as natural, safe time-tested laxatives in traditional as well as modern systems of medicine. India is a leading producer and exporter of senna leaves in the world. Understanding of the genes/molecular basis of sennosides production will expedite the development of cultivars with high sennoside content. At DMAPR, Anand with funding from Department of Science and Technology (DST), under the Fasttack Scheme for Young Scientist and the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) New Delhi the research work was carried to deciphering the biosynthetic pathway of sennosides in plants.
