Description
Weedy rice (Oryza sativa f. spontanea), harboring phenotypic characteristics of both wide and domesticated rice, emerges as one of the most notorious weeds in rice culture worldwide. The source of its formation is poorly understood and massive available rice genomic data provide a new way to shine light on this issue. We investigated the phylogenetics, population structure and chromosomal admixture pattern of weedy rice in the low Yangtze region, China by whole genome re-sequencing. An unambiguous indica-japonica hybridization origin of the weedy rice was suggested which was merely reported by previous researches. Furthermore, a large amount of novel SNPs were detected across the genome, some of which were related to ‘stress response’ revealing that multiple genomic variations could be generated after the indica-japonica hybridization for environmental adaptation.
