F1028 was selected for low amino-nitrogen concentration from F1 01 0, PI 535818. Selection was based upon the amino-nitrogen concentration of roots relative to other roots within a grid. Moderate-size roots typical of the parental population were chosen for individual amino-nitrogen measurements. Sampled roots remained viable and were used as mother roots to produce seed for each of four mass selection cycles, Selected plants were allowed to interpollinate,seed was harvested in bulk.
