Pedigree
C944 is a multigerm, self-fertile, genetic-male sterile facilitated, random mating population developed for high % sugar in a disease resistant background. It has about 12% parentage from very high % sugar Polish accessions. The remainder of the germplasm is typical Salinas multigerm material developed over many years, including C78 (PI 593671), C37 (PI 590715), C931 (PI 636340), etc. It was developed to provide an improved germplasm base for the extraction and selection of high sugar, disease resistant, selfed progenies for population improvement. Polish lines were crossed and backcrossed to C931. The final backcross was to self-sterile lines such as C78. The original population was created in 2005 when selected S1 progenies were recombined through the segregating genetic male steriles to produce popn-5944. Popn-5944 was mass selected for resistance to rhizomania, Erwinia root rot, and high sugar content and yield to produce 7944, being stored as C944.
Comments
C944 combines genetic variability for resistance to rhizomania (Rz1) (Beet necrotic yellow vein virus), virus yellows (Beet yellows virus, Beet western yellows virus, Beet chlorosis virus), curly top, Erwinia carotovora betavasculorum, powdery mildew (Erysiphe polygoni), bolting, downy mildew (Peronospora betae), etc. in a base that has the potential for high sugar content and sugar yield combining ability. It is estimated to be about 12% high sugar Polish germplasm in a Salinas base. As a population, it had significantly higher sugar content than most Salinas open-pollinated and random mating populations. C944 is multigerm and self fertile and segregates of genetic male sterility (aa) and hypocotyl color (32% rr). It was developed to provide a source for population improvement using selfed progeny families that have potential for multiple disease resistance and sugar productivity.
