Pedigree
C943 recombines self-fertile, backcross lines developed over a 12 year period to combine disease resistance in a higher % sugar base. The recurrent parent was similar to C931 (PI 636340). The high % sugar donor parents were accessions from Poland. The component lines were CZ25-9 (PI 615520), C930-19 (PI 628758), C930-35 (PI 628759), Z131-14, Z131-18, and Z131-20. These lines were combined through segregating genetic male sterility in each component to produce 3943 in 2003. Rhizomania resistant roots of population 3943 were recombined through segregating male steriles to produce 4943. From population 4943, S1 progenies were generated and evaluated under rhizomania conditions in replicated field tests. In 2007, 19 S1 progenies selected on the basis of % sugar and sugar yield were increased in bulk to produce C943.
Comments
C943 is a self-fertile, multigerm population that segregates for genetic male sterility and hypocotyl color (39% rr). About 75% of its germplasm comes from Salinas developments such as C931. About 25% comes from very high % sugar accessions from Poland. Population C943 segregates for resistance to rhizomania (Rz1) caused by Beet necrotic yellow vein virus. It has significantly higher % sugar than C931. It should be a source for combined disease resistance in a high sugar background that can be used to generate selfed progenies for improved performance. It is being stored as C943.
